2017 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Touring off-road ability is one the standard four-wheel-drive system is much better at providing traction in slippery conditions than many of its rivals. The drawback is that the Subaru feels quite dated on road with its leaning body and overly soft suspension. Equipment on entry-level models is comparable to rivals, so you get an infotainment system with a seven-inch touchscreen, climate control, rear-view camera, electrically adjustable driver’s seat and cruise control.

2017 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Touring engine gets slightly better fuel economy with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). And the all-wheel-drive system adds available torque vectoring. Most importantly, Subaru adds and improves several safety features. The EyeSight system gets color cameras with wider and longer range. Newly available are automatic high-beam assist, steering-linked headlights that point into turns, and reverse automatic braking.

The 2.5-liter flat-four remains the base engine. The engine and the CVT that it’s mated with on most models result in improved city/highway EPA fuel economy ratings of 26/32 mpg. That’s a bump of 2 mpg in the city; highway mileage stays the same. Unlike nearly all of its competitors, the base Forester 2.5i and 2.5i. Premium models still offer a six-speed manual transmission, although the row-your-own gearbox pares the EPA ratings to 22/29 mpg city/highway.

Despite the hard plastics and unattractive fascia, it’ll weather anything thrown at it by children and pets. There’s a good range of adjustment for the driver eight-way electrical adjustment across the range and there’s plenty of room inside the Forester for four adults, but this is true for its competitors too. In terms of inside space the Forester is class average.

Tall drivers will find their knees contacting the center console and door panels, which aren’t soft. Ironically the rear seats have a better contour to them. There’s ample headroom and legroom, with a low driveshaft tunnel, as well as rear doors that are wide enough for easy entry and exit. Every model but the base has a 60/40 rear seat that folds nearly flat with a one-touch mechanism, creating a generous cargo capacity of 74.7 cubic feet. And there’s still a good 34.4 cubic feet behind the rear seat.
